The Federal Government has summoned South Africa’s Acting High Commissioner following fresh reports of attacks targeting Nigerians and their businesses in South Africa.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the envoy has been invited to a meeting scheduled for Monday, May 4, 2026, in Abuja, where Nigeria is expected to formally express its concerns over the incidents.
According to the ministry, recent protests in parts of South Africa led to cases of harassment, violence, and destruction of properties belonging to foreigners, including Nigerian nationals.
Officials are expected to raise reported cases of mistreatment and seek clarification from South African authorities during the diplomatic engagement.
The development adds to a long history of xenophobic-related tensions between both countries, which have previously experienced repeated diplomatic strains over attacks on foreign nationals.
The Federal Government has urged Nigerians residing in South Africa to remain calm while diplomatic processes are ongoing, assuring them that their safety and welfare remain a priority.
Nigeria and South Africa continue to maintain strong economic and political relations, but recurring incidents of violence against foreign nationals have frequently tested bilateral ties.
The outcome of the scheduled Abuja meeting is expected to play a key role in easing tensions and strengthening protection measures for affected Nigerians.
