FG Counters Critics as Tinubu Prepares for UK Visit

The Federal Government has dismissed some criticisms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s policies, describing them as the result of inadequate understanding and deliberate misrepresentation.

Speaking during an engagement with international media in the United Kingdom, the Minister of Information and Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said many of the concerns raised about the administration’s reforms are based on misinformation.

“We know that Nigeria has had its own fair share of criticism about some of those policies instituted back home, some of them arising from a lack of adequate knowledge and some out of sheer mischief,” Idris said.

The media engagement formed part of preparations for Tinubu’s upcoming state visit to the UK, where he is expected to hold high-level meetings aimed at strengthening bilateral relations.

Idris noted that Nigeria and the United Kingdom share a long-standing relationship rooted in diplomatic, economic, and cultural cooperation.

“This visit highlights the historic and strategic relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, a partnership rooted in deep diplomatic, economic, cultural and democratic ties,” he said.

According to him, the visit will provide an opportunity to deepen collaboration in areas such as trade and investment, security cooperation, climate action, education, and technological innovation.

Tinubu is expected to be hosted by King Charles III during the visit, which officials say will combine ceremonial events with strategic discussions aimed at strengthening economic and diplomatic ties between both countries.

Ahead of the visit, the British monarch recently hosted members of the Nigerian diaspora in the UK at a reception featuring traditional cuisine and live music by Dele Sosimi and the Afrobeats Orchestra.

Security arrangements have also been intensified around Windsor Castle, where parts of the state visit activities are expected to take place, including temporary airspace restrictions and increased security deployment.

The trip will mark the first state visit by a Nigerian leader to the United Kingdom in 37 years, highlighting the significance of the diplomatic engagement between the two countries.
