Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo’s recent feud with his mother has become a major story in the Philippines, overshadowing the excitement over his historic twin gold medal victories at the Paris Olympics.
The conflict centers on Angelica Poquiz-Yulo’s management of her 24-year-old son’s finances and her reported disapproval of his girlfriend, a popular TikTok content creator. The drama has played out publicly through interviews, social media posts, and even a hastily arranged press conference, leading many to urge the media to exercise caution.
Yulo, only the second Filipino to win an Olympic gold medal after weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz in 2020, is already a well-known figure in the Philippines. His twin golds have further elevated his profile, sparking national pride and earning him a 20 million-peso ($350,000; £273,000) cash bonus from the government. Corporate sponsors have also pledged a luxury condominium and a lifetime supply of local delicacies.
The capital city of Manila has begun preparing for Yulo’s celebratory homecoming. However, the celebrations have been marred by reports of a recent interview in which Ms. Yulo defended herself against allegations of financial mismanagement. She claimed she had deposited her son’s earnings in a Manila bank and managed his funds on his behalf.
On August 6, Yulo responded with a TikTok video, questioning his mother about his past prize money, which he claimed he “never received.” He also defended his girlfriend, rejecting his mother’s judgment based on her appearance and liberal upbringing in Australia.
“My message to you, Ma, is I hope you heal and move on. I have forgiven you a long time ago. I pray that you are always safe and sound,” Yulo said in the video.
