ECOWAS Calls For Timely Release Of Liberia Run-Off Presidential Election Results

The ECOWAS Election Observation Mission (EOM) has urged Liberia’s National Elections Commission (NEC) to ensure the prompt and transparent release of the results from the presidential run-off.
Professor Attahiru Jega, the Head of the 80-member ECOWAS Election Observation Mission and former Chairman of Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), made this plea in the Preliminary Statement on Thursday.
Jega emphasized that timely disclosure is crucial for consolidating the achievements of the October 10 general elections and ensuring the stability of the country.
The run-off features former Vice President Joseph Boakai of the Unity Party contesting against the incumbent President George Weah. The first round on October 10, which included 20 candidates, did not produce a winner with the required over 50 percent for presidency.
Jega also urged candidates, political alliances, and supporters to prioritize national unity, peace, and stability. He called on them to honor commitments made within the framework of the Revised Farmington River Declaration.
Additionally, the ECOWAS Mission appealed to all stakeholders to avoid any actions that could incite unrest and called on security agents to uphold professionalism in maintaining order in the country.
