Team Nigeria’s women’s basketball squad, D’Tigress, concluded their campaign at the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympics with a valiant performance, losing 88-74 to the U.S. women’s basketball team in the quarter-final on Wednesday night.
The victory marked USA’s 59th consecutive win in Olympic play, a streak that dates back to the 1996 Games in Atlanta. With this win, the USA team advances to face Australia in the semifinal round on Friday, as they continue their quest for an eighth straight Olympic gold medal.
In the qualifying round, USA had previously dominated D’Tigress with a 100-46 victory.
However, the African champions put up a much stronger fight in Wednesday’s game, trailing the USA 31-27 early in the second quarter.
A’ja Wilson spearheaded the U.S. effort with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Jackie Young, moving from the bench to the starting lineup, contributed 15 points and three rebounds. Breanna Stewart added 13 points, five rebounds, and three assists.
The USA showcased their dominance with a 54-41 edge in field-goal percentage, a 44-28 advantage on the boards, and assisted on 31 of their 34 made field goals.
