Director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer, were found stabbed to death in their Los Angeles home on Sunday, and their son, Nick Reiner, has been arrested and charged with murder, police said.
Nick Reiner, 32, was taken into custody Sunday night, hours after the couple’s bodies were discovered at their residence in the Brentwood neighborhood, according to law enforcement sources. Authorities said he is being held without bail.
“Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the Reiners,” Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell said in a statement Monday.
Law enforcement sources said Nick Reiner was not at the home when his parents were found. Investigators believe he left the residence sometime after the killings. Police were able to locate him later that evening near the University of Southern California, where he was arrested without incident.
Sources said the couple’s daughter discovered the bodies and alerted authorities.
Investigators are also examining events from the night before the killings. According to sources, Rob and Nick Reiner had an argument Saturday night while attending a holiday party. Witnesses at the gathering reportedly observed Nick Reiner behaving unusually.
Rob Reiner was a celebrated director, producer and actor whose career spanned decades. His work included acclaimed films such as The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally…, Stand By Me, This Is Spinal Tap and A Few Good Men, among many others.
The investigation remains ongoing.
