Court Dismisses Bobrisky’s Fundamental Rights Lawsuit Against EFCC

The Federal High Court in Lagos, presided over by Justice Alexander Owoeye, has dismissed a fundamental rights lawsuit filed by Nigerian crossdresser Bobrisky (real name: Okuneye Idris Olanrewaju) against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Bobrisky had sought ₦200 million in damages, claiming harassment and unlawful detention following his arrest and trial earlier this year.

In its ruling delivered on November 28, 2024, the court found that Bobrisky failed to provide sufficient evidence to support his allegations. Justice Owoeye stated that the applicant’s claims of rights violations were without merit and lacked credible evidence. The judge further noted that Bobrisky had not justified the reliefs he sought, including a perpetual injunction to prevent the EFCC from harassing, arresting, or declaring him wanted.

The lawsuit stemmed from Bobrisky’s arrest on April 4, 2024, by the EFCC over alleged Naira abuse. Following his arrest, Bobrisky was convicted by Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi on April 12, 2024, and sentenced to six months in prison.

The court also dismissed Bobrisky’s claims against the National Assembly, noting that the accusations lacked sufficient evidence.
