The Oyo State High Court has granted approval to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its National Chairman, Umar Damagum, to proceed with the party’s national convention scheduled for November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
The ruling, delivered on Monday by Justice A.L. Akintola, followed an ex parte application filed by Folahan Malomo Adelabi, who sought the court’s intervention to prevent any obstruction to the planned event.
Listed as defendants in the suit were the PDP, Damagum, Adamawa State Governor Umar Fintiri, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Adelabi asked the court for an interim injunction restraining the defendants from “truncating or frustrating” the Guidelines, Timetable, and Schedule of Activities for the national convention pending the determination of the substantive motion. He also requested an order compelling the PDP and its leaders to strictly adhere to the approved convention timetable and procedures.
The ruling comes just days after the Federal High Court in Abuja issued a contrary order, restraining the PDP from holding the same convention.
In that case, Justice James Omotosho directed the party to “put its house in order” and issue the statutory 21-day notice to INEC before proceeding. He further instructed the electoral body not to recognise any convention outcome that violates due process or electoral regulations.
With the latest decision from the Oyo court, the PDP leadership now faces conflicting judicial orders from two courts over the fate of its planned national convention.
