Renowned Nigerian author and global literary icon, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, has once again thrown her weight behind former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, describing him as a rare political figure motivated by genuine concern for Nigeria rather than ego or personal ambition.
In an exclusive interview, Adichie hailed Obi’s humility, integrity, and sense of accountability, stating that these values set him apart from most of Nigeria’s political class.
“He doesn’t need to be president. He wants to be because he cares about Nigeria but he doesn’t need to be. And that’s a very important distinction,” Adichie said. “There are people who are desperate to become president, not because they have good intentions, but because of their egos.”
The award-winning novelist, who has often used her global platform to speak on democracy and social justice, emphasized that her support for Obi stems from both personal experience and patriotic hope for a better Nigeria.
“It is rooted in my love for this country,” she said. “I believe that with the right leader, we can be better than we are.”
According to Adichie, Obi views public office as a duty, not a privilege, and carries a rare commitment to servant leadership.
“Peter Obi is not a person who expects you to thank him for doing his job as a leader, because to him it’s his job,” she explained. “There’s a sense, I think, in Peter Obi that he’s accountable to the people. He doesn’t think that somehow he will lord it over people.”
Reflecting on her long-standing acquaintance with the Labour Party figure, Adichie noted that Obi’s character has remained consistent over the years, describing him as genuine, values-driven, and intellectually curious.
“The person I knew 15 years ago is still the same in terms of his values,” she said. “He is genuine, consistent, and curious—qualities that I believe are essential in a leader.”
Adichie’s latest remarks add further weight to Obi’s reputation as a principled reformer, as public discourse continues to build around potential candidates for Nigeria’s future leadership.
Her endorsement resonates with many Nigerians, particularly the youth, who see Obi as a credible alternative in a political landscape long plagued by corruption and impunity.
