Daniel Bwala, former Atiku Abubakar 2023 Presidential Campaign spokesman and current supporter of President Bola Tinubu, has endorsed the arrest of journalists and media professionals involved in criminal activities.
Speaking on ChannelsTV’s Politics Today on Tuesday, Bwala asserted that journalists do not have immunity from lawful apprehension if they engage in criminal behavior.
Bwala, who has aligned himself with President Tinubu’s administration, acknowledged the importance of free speech but stressed that it does not exempt individuals from legal consequences if they commit crimes.
“We are making appreciable progress with respect to free speech. I can count nothing less than five prominent critics of this government who are walking freely,” Bwala stated. “However, if you are involved in a crime, you don’t have immunity, regardless of your profession.”
His comments come amid rising concerns over the treatment of investigative journalists under the current administration, with reports of arbitrary arrests and extended detentions by security agents. Bwala responded to these concerns by advising journalists who feel they have been unlawfully detained to seek legal redress through the courts.
“The courts are available to preserve the rights of the Nigerian people. If you are unlawfully detained or arrested, you can approach the court for the enforcement of your fundamental human rights,” Bwala emphasized.
He concluded by expressing confidence in President Tinubu’s commitment to protecting citizens’ rights, asserting, “Unless someone comes with a contrary report, I for one believe that under this administration of President Bola Tinubu, the rights of the Nigerian people are protected.”
