Bauchi State Inaugurates Committee to Implement New Minimum Wage for Civil Servants

A tripartite technical committee consisting of representatives from the Bauchi State government, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) was inaugurated on Friday to oversee the implementation of the new national minimum wage for civil servants in Bauchi State. The 11-member committee will work out the specifics for applying the recently agreed N70,000 minimum wage.

Following a State Executive Council meeting that included union leaders, NLC chairman Comrade Dauda Shu’aibu confirmed that the N70,000 minimum wage had been agreed upon. He outlined five essential stages in the process: negotiation, legislation, presidential assent, gazetting, and the issuance of circulars by the National Salaries and Wages Commission—all of which have been completed.

Shu’aibu emphasized that the NLC had conducted training in Kano and Lagos to equip union members with strong negotiation skills. The newly established technical committee, which includes representatives from different salary structures in the state, will begin negotiations on October 4, 2024, using the necessary tools and official circulars. The committee’s goal is to ensure that Bauchi State civil servants receive the benefits of the new N70,000 national minimum wage, aligning state pay with national standards.
