Governor Bala Mohammed has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the Allied Peoples Movement, marking a significant political shift ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Mohammed announced the move on Saturday at the Bauchi Government House, alongside APM National Chairman Yusuf Dantalle and other party stakeholders.
“After extensive consultation, we have taken a firm and strategic decision to join the Allied Peoples Movement,” he said, adding that the move is aimed at securing electoral victory and providing a credible political alternative.
The governor explained that with the 2027 elections approaching, it was necessary to align with a platform capable of effectively mobilising supporters and sustaining political momentum.
“Our duty is to provide energy and direction and ensure that the opportunity available to us is not diminished,” he stated.
He expressed appreciation to the PDP the platform under which he was elected in 2019 and re-elected in 2023 for its role in his political journey and contributions to the development of Bauchi State.
Following the announcement, Dantalle formally welcomed Mohammed into the APM, presenting him with the party’s membership card, cap, and flag.
The defection comes after months of speculation over Mohammed’s political future amid internal challenges within the PDP. Until his exit, he served as chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum.
His departure also leaves Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde as the remaining PDP governor, further reshaping the opposition landscape ahead of 2027.
Prior to joining the APM, Mohammed had engaged in consultations with leaders of the African Democratic Congress and the All Progressives Congress, though those talks did not materialise into a defection.
