Aviation Regulator Demands Swift Action on Security, Public Trust

The Director General of the Civil Aviation Authority (DGCA), Capt. Chris Najomo, has called for urgent collective action to strengthen aviation security and rebuild public confidence following recent incidents of passenger unruliness and system lapses.

Speaking at an emergency meeting of the National Civil Aviation Security Committee with industry stakeholders in Abuja, Najomo stressed that the forum was not for blame but to confront shared responsibilities in ensuring a safer and more secure air transport sector.

He warned that the lapses threatened the integrity of Nigeria’s aviation system, making it imperative for regulators, airlines, security agencies, and airport operators to close gaps in procedure, technology, and human response.

According to him, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) deemed it necessary to urgently convene stakeholders to ensure that rules and responsibilities outlined in aviation laws, regulations, and security manuals are clearly understood and diligently enforced.

Najomo said the meeting aimed to deepen inter-agency coordination, strengthen enforcement of operational protocols, identify corrective measures, and prioritize continuous training of aviation security personnel.

“While policies and regulations are already in place, their effectiveness depends on practical implementation with courage and professionalism,” he noted.

He praised the leadership of the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development for steering the sector towards fair resolutions in line with global standards, while also acknowledging the National Assembly’s call for stakeholders to live up to their duties.

Najomo further reminded participants that aviation safety extends beyond infrastructure and agencies, stressing that passengers, in addition to their rights, also have responsibilities.

“The safety of our aviation system is the safety of our nation,” he declared, urging frank dialogue that would lead to tangible outcomes.

The NCAA boss emphasized that resolutions from the meeting must translate into immediate actions to secure airport operations, restore passenger confidence, and close existing vulnerabilities in the aviation ecosystem.
