At least nine people were killed Sunday after two gunmen opened fire at Sydney’s Bondi Beach during what authorities described as a targeted attack on a Jewish event, New South Wales Premier Chris Minns said. Police have classified the incident as a terrorism-related attack.
“This attack was designed to target Sydney’s Jewish community on the first day of Hanukkah,” Minns said at the outset of a news conference Sunday evening.
The New South Wales Police Force said 11 additional people were injured, including two police officers. One suspect was shot and killed at the scene, while a second alleged gunman remains in critical condition, police said in a statement issued around 9 p.m. local time.
The shooting unfolded along the busy waterfront shortly after 6:45 p.m. local time, when police received the first reports of gunfire.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the violence, calling the scenes “shocking and distressing.”
“Police and emergency responders are on the ground working to save lives,” Albanese said in a statement. “My thoughts are with every person affected.”
Authorities quickly urged the public to stay away from the area and seek shelter. In a later update, police said two people were in custody but emphasized that the operation remained ongoing.
“Please obey all police directions and do not cross police lines,” the department said.
Images from the scene showed a heavy emergency response, with armed officers securing the area and injured victims being transported by stretcher.
