Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Monday formally registered as a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Adamawa State, ending months of speculation over his political alignment.
Atiku was met with a rousing reception from supporters who sang, drummed, and waved placards bearing his image. He acknowledged the crowd from his vehicle before receiving his ADC membership card.
His aide, Abdul Rasheeth, confirmed that Atiku finalised the registration after a weekend meeting with key party stakeholders. Moments after completing the process, Atiku posted on X, saying, “It’s official. – AA.”
The move cements Atiku’s position within the coalition party he endorsed in July, a platform uniting opposition figures like Peter Obi and Babachir Lawal to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.
Until now, Atiku and other opposition leaders had supported the coalition without formal membership. His entry is expected to boost the ADC’s profile and shape the emerging opposition alliance ahead of the next general elections.
