Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has called for Nigeria to consider using railways to transport petroleum products, emphasizing enhanced safety measures following a devastating petrol tanker explosion on the Kano-Hadejia expressway. The accident, which was confirmed by Jigawa police, claimed 90 lives and injured 50 more, many of whom were attempting to scoop fuel from the overturned tanker.
In his statement on Wednesday, Abubakar expressed sorrow over the recurring tragedies caused by petrol tanker explosions, describing the Jigawa incident as “one too many.” He urged the government to explore rail transport as a safer alternative for moving petroleum products across the country and highlighted the need for better driver training and revised safety protocols when handling flammable materials.
Abubakar extended his condolences to the people of Jigawa State and called on authorities to focus on rescue operations and ensure the proper treatment of the injured. He expressed hope for comfort for the grieving families and eternal peace for the victims.
