Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the alleged overreach of his son, Seyi Tinubu, following claims of interference in the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS). Atiku’s plea came in a statement released on Friday by his media adviser, Paul Ibe.
Atiku warned that Nigeria should not be treated as personal property and condemned alleged attempts to buy political loyalty. The controversy began when NANS President, Atiku Isah, accused Seyi Tinubu and Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, of offering him a ₦100 million bribe in Lagos to promote the Tinubu administration’s image. Isah claimed he rejected the offer due to the government’s underperformance and further alleged threats to his life from individuals loyal to the president.
Seyi Tinubu, in a statement posted on Instagram, denied the allegations, calling them false and defamatory.
Atiku, however, described the accusations as serious and demanded a swift response from the presidency. “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu must urgently rein in his family members, particularly his son, Seyi Tinubu, who appears determined to purchase political loyalty for his father by any means necessary, including coercion, violence, and intimidation,” the statement read.
Atiku further emphasized that allegations of assault, abduction, and bribery undermine democratic principles and civil liberties. He warned that, if left unchecked, the situation could tarnish state institutions, particularly with growing concerns that even top security officials may be influenced. Atiku reiterated that Nigeria is a democracy, not a monarchy, and urged Nigerians to stand against any abuse of power.
Atiku also dismissed any notion of a political alliance with NANS President Isah, clarifying that their meetings had been focused solely on education reform and student welfare. He called for an independent investigation into Isah’s allegations, stating that any harm to the student leader would not be tolerated.
“Nigerians deserve truth, accountability, and leadership that respects the rule of law — not a regime that weaponizes power to silence dissent,” Atiku concluded.
