APC Demands Makinde’s Resignation Over Oyo Insecurity

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has called for the resignation of Governor Seyi Makinde, citing worsening insecurity in the state, particularly the recent kidnapping of schoolchildren in Oriire Local Government Area.

In a statement issued by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, the APC accused the governor of failing to provide adequate security for residents, describing his response to the abduction as “cluelessness, insincerity and criminal ineptitude.”

The party argued that Makinde had fallen short of his constitutional responsibility to protect lives and property, insisting that his leadership approach had worsened the security situation in the state.

It maintained that if the governor is unable to guarantee the safety of citizens, he should resign, while also cautioning voters against supporting what it described as “parochial” leadership in future elections.

The statement further referenced previous administrations in the state, claiming that earlier governors had adopted more effective security coordination and funding strategies. It added that the current situation reflected governance failures that required urgent political accountability.

Meanwhile, The Muslim Congress has also raised concern over the growing insecurity across the country, particularly the increasing cases of kidnappings and attacks on schools and communities.

The group’s President, AbdulWasi’i Bangbala, described the trend as a national emergency, warning that insecurity had become routine and required urgent structural reforms rather than isolated responses.

The organisation called for greater transparency in security operations, improved intelligence coordination, and the proper prosecution of arrested suspects.

It also renewed its call for the creation of state police, arguing that Nigeria’s centralised security system is overstretched and no longer effective in tackling widespread criminal activity.

Additionally, the group urged the government to strengthen initiatives such as the Safe Schools programme and improve protection for schools located in vulnerable areas, especially those near forests reportedly used by criminal groups.
