Amusan Sits Out Zurich Final to Focus on Worlds

Nigeria’s world record holder in the women’s 100m hurdles, Tobi Amusan, has withdrawn from the Diamond League final in Zurich, Switzerland, scheduled to conclude on Thursday.

Amusan, who qualified as the second-best competitor in her event with 27 points, has been replaced by Devynne Charlton of the Bahamas. The line-up now features Charlton, world champion Danielle Williams, Jamaica’s Ackera Nugent, the Netherlands’ Nadine Visser, Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji and Selina von Jackowski. The United States will be represented by Tonea Marshall, Grace Stark, and Kendra Harrison.

Despite her absence, the 28-year-old retains her world record of 12.29 seconds, set in September 2022 when she clinched her second Diamond League title. Amusan has enjoyed back-to-back triumphs in the competition, winning in 2021, 2022, and 2023.

Her withdrawal is believed to be a strategic decision to focus on the World Championships in Tokyo next month. Amusan’s last outing in Lausanne saw her stumble at the first hurdle, finishing fifth in 12.82 seconds.

In related updates, Favour Ofili has been delisted from the women’s 200m event despite meeting the qualifying mark. However, African record holder in the men’s 400m hurdles, Ezekiel Nathaniel, will compete in Zurich after winning his first professional race in Lausanne with a time of 48.08 seconds.

Also on the roster is Nigerian sprinter Udodi Onwuzurike, who made his Diamond League debut last week and will feature in the men’s 200m final.
