National caucus leaders of the Yoruba sociopolitical group, Afenifere, visited lawyer and author Dele Farotimi on Friday at the Ado-Ekiti Correctional Centre. They delivered a private message from their national leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, and assessed Farotimi’s wellbeing.
Farotimi, a member of Afenifere’s national caucus, is being remanded over allegations of defaming Chief Afe Babalola, the founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti (ABUAD).
In a statement by Afenifere’s Deputy Secretary General, Alade Rotimi-John, the group criticized the actions of the chief magistrate presiding over the case. They expressed disappointment that the magistrate failed to prioritize a bail application for what they described as a “bailable offence.”
The statement labeled Farotimi’s remand as a “deeply disturbing miscarriage of justice” and noted that Afenifere would decide its next course of action after the magistrate’s ruling on the bail application scheduled for December 20.
Prominent Afenifere leaders who attended the solidarity visit included Chief Supo Shonibare, Basorun Segun Sanni, Mrs Nike Olujembola, Mrs Toyin Falade, Pastor Olayemi Olajuyinnu, and Mr Tunde Babarinde.
