ADC Denies Zoning Deal, Dismisses Obidient Movement’s Claims

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) says it has not taken any position on the zoning of its presidential ticket, refuting claims by the Obidient Movement.

In a statement yesterday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, dismissed remarks credited to the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, who accused the ADC of breaking promises.

“You cannot break any promise you have not made,” Abdullahi said, describing Tanko’s comments as “misleading and confusing.”

The Obidient Movement, which backs the presidential ambition of former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, had faulted ADC’s non-committal stance, arguing that equity and fairness should shape the zoning arrangement.

“As the Obidient Movement, being part of the main consulting bloc, we are particularly concerned about how the party intends to zone its presidential ticket. Considering that the presidency is currently held by the South, issues of equity and fairness must guide such decisions if the party truly aims to secure victory in the 2027 elections,” Tanko said. He added that zoning principal offices within the coalition would ensure justice and inclusivity.

But Abdullahi, a former Minister of Sports, questioned Tanko’s role in the coalition and whether his comments reflected Peter Obi’s position. “ADC leaders have not discussed zoning. How can we break a promise we have not made? Tanko’s view does not reflect Peter Obi’s position,” he stated.

The ADC recently asked its key allies to fully commit by resigning from their parties and formally joining the platform. The caucus meeting where the decision was taken was attended by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai. Peter Obi, still a member of the Labour Party, was absent a development that sparked concerns among the Obidient Movement and prompted Tanko’s reaction.
