Actor James Handy has died after being stabbed at a Los Angeles residence, and police have arrested the son of his longtime girlfriend in connection with the killing.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers responded to a home on Wednesday morning after receiving a 911 call from a man who reportedly stated, “I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin.”
When officers arrived, they found Handy, 81, unconscious in the front yard with a stab wound to the chest. He was transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Police said Michael Gledhill, 44, who is the son of Handy’s girlfriend and lived at the residence with his mother, identified himself to officers as the individual they were seeking.
Gledhill was arrested and booked on suspicion of murder. Jail records show his bail has been set at $2 million. Authorities have not indicated whether he has retained legal representation.
Born in New York, Handy enjoyed a decades-long acting career, appearing in numerous film and television productions. He was widely recognized for his role as an exterminator in the movie Jumanji and more recently portrayed bartender Jimmy in Top Gun: Maverick. His television credits included appearances in NCIS: Los Angeles, The Closer and Cold Case.
Paying tribute to the veteran actor, talent representative Pam Ellis-Evenas described Handy as a gifted performer and valued friend.
“I could not have asked for a more talented, humble or gracious client and friend than James Handy,” she said.
