The governments of Abia and Imo States have inaugurated a joint security taskforce and surveillance operation along the Aba-Owerri expressway, from Owerrinta in Abia to Owerri in Imo, following a rise in criminal attacks along the route.
The announcement was made by Ferdinand Ekeoma, Special Adviser to Abia Governor Alex Otti on Media and Publicity, after a strategic emergency security meeting on December 4, 2025, at the Imo State Government House in Owerri.
Governors Otti and Hope Uzodinma resolved to deploy a taskforce made up of soldiers, naval personnel, police officers, DSS operatives, and other security agencies. The team will conduct 24-hour patrols starting December 5, using drones and modern surveillance equipment to monitor the expressway and surrounding areas.
Governor Otti commended Uzodinma for the recent apprehension of criminals linked to attacks on his advance team and other passengers. Both leaders assured commuters of their safety and warned that any criminal caught along the route would face severe consequences.
The initiative is designed to curb kidnappings, armed robberies, and other criminal activities, particularly during the festive season when road traffic is expected to increase.
