Kenneth Okonkwo, spokesperson for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, has described President Bola Tinubu as an “absentee President,” accusing him of failing to engage Nigerians directly on his policies and plans.
In a statement posted on his verified X handle on Saturday, Okonkwo alleged that Tinubu had not granted regular interviews to independent media organisations or participated in national debates with opposition candidates.
He also criticised the President’s proposed campaign itinerary for the 2027 general election, claiming Tinubu planned to visit only 12 of Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
“Tinubu will campaign in only 12 states out of 36 states and the FCT. This is about 30% coverage of the entire Nigeria.
“He is simply an absentee President not fit for re-election. How can you vote for a politician whom you are unaware of his origin, schools, plans and policies for you?” Okonkwo said.
The ADC spokesperson also questioned the country’s financial position, alleging that Nigeria was technically bankrupt because the Federal Government had to borrow to meet its debt obligations.
Citing figures he presented, Okonkwo claimed the Federal Government spent ₦7.7 trillion on interest payments in the first half of 2026, while generating total revenue of ₦6.2 trillion.
“This means that interest payments alone exceeded the government’s revenue by N1.5trn. Tinubu has not surpassed 30% in anything he has embarked on during his first term,” he said.
Okonkwo’s remarks come as opposition figures and political parties intensify criticism of the Tinubu administration ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
