A federal judge has temporarily ordered the Trump administration to restore White House press credentials for journalists from CNN, Politico and MS NOW, blocking the administration’s ban while the legal dispute continues.

U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly granted the news organizations’ request for a temporary restraining order in their lawsuit challenging the revocation of their White House access.

The order directs administration officials, their agents and representatives — excluding President Donald Trump himself — to “immediately return, reinstate, and restore” the hard-pass credentials previously held by employees of the three news organizations.

The White House revoked the credentials on Sept. 18 after Trump announced that CNN, Politico and MS NOW would no longer be allowed access to the White House grounds. Trump accused the organizations of publishing what he described as false reporting.

CNN, Politico and MS NOW subsequently filed a federal lawsuit challenging the decision, arguing that the ban violated constitutional protections for freedom of speech and the press. The organizations also sought emergency court intervention to regain access while the broader case proceeds.

The administration has defended its authority to determine access to the White House and argued that the organizations remained free to report on the president from outside the grounds. The news organizations contend that revoking their credentials because of their coverage amounts to unconstitutional retaliation.

Kelly’s temporary restraining order is scheduled to remain in effect for 14 days unless the court issues another order.

The ruling restores the outlets’ access for now but does not resolve the underlying lawsuit over whether the White House acted lawfully in revoking their credentials.
