Shakira Pledges to Rebuild Schools After Devastating Colombia Earthquake

Colombian music superstar Shakira has pledged to help rebuild at least 10 schools and restore a local university following last week’s devastating earthquake in western Colombia.

The singer announced the initiative Monday during a surprise visit to Quibdó, the capital of Chocó province and one of the areas badly affected by the disaster.

During her visit, Shakira toured damaged schools, met with students and assessed the destruction caused by the earthquake, which killed hundreds of people and affected thousands of educational facilities across the region.

The Grammy-winning artist said one of her biggest concerns was ensuring that damaged schools are not forgotten once the immediate emergency response ends.

“What worries me the most is that schools are not rebuilt once this emergency is over,” Shakira told reporters. “Every day that children don’t go to school is a day they miss out on their future.”

Shakira was joined by philanthropist Howard Buffett, son of billionaire investor Warren Buffett. Buffett has supported development projects in Colombia and previously worked with Shakira to establish schools in the country.

The Howard G. Buffett Foundation will partner with Shakira’s Fundación Pies Descalzos, or Barefoot Foundation, to reconstruct at least 10 schools.

“When she calls, I come,” Buffett said during the visit.

Shakira also announced plans to personally support the reconstruction of a technological university in Chocó.

Additional financial commitments include $500,000 each from the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund and Live Nation, along with $250,000 from CAF — Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean.

The funding will go toward rebuilding damaged schools and helping students return to classrooms as communities across western Colombia continue recovering from the deadly earthquake.
