NFF Sacks Super Falcons’ Coach After World Cup Exit

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has ordered the entire technical crew of the Super Falcons, led by head coach Justine Madugu, to step down with immediate effect following the team’s disappointing 2026 campaign and failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The NFF Executive Committee announced the decision on Monday in a brief statement on its official X account but did not give a specific reason for the sack.

The decision follows the Super Falcons’ disappointing showing at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) and their subsequent failure to secure a place at the 2027 World Cup.

Nigeria’s campaign at the continental tournament ended in the quarter-finals with a 1-0 defeat to Cameroon, denying the nine-time African champions an automatic World Cup ticket.

It was the first time the Super Falcons had been eliminated at the quarter-final stage of the competition.

The team had also endured an unconvincing group-stage campaign, including an opening defeat to Malawi, who were making their first appearance at the tournament. Malawi went on to reach the final before losing to Cameroon.

After missing automatic qualification, Nigeria entered the African play-off route for another chance to reach the World Cup. That opportunity also ended in disappointment after the Falcons suffered a 2-1 defeat to South Africa.

The result ended Nigeria’s remarkable record of appearing at every edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Madugu had been part of the Super Falcons’ technical structure for several years. The NFF appointed him alongside Edwin Okon to the team’s technical crew in November 2021 as part of efforts to reorganise the coaching set-up.

The latest decision represents a major shake-up of the management of one of Nigeria’s most successful national teams.

The NFF has yet to announce a replacement for Madugu or disclose whether an interim technical crew will be appointed ahead of the Super Falcons’ next competitive engagements.
