The Kennedy Center board voted Thursday to close the renowned Washington cultural institution for two years for renovations and again place President Donald Trump’s name on its facade, according to Democratic Rep. Joyce Beatty, an ex-officio member of the board.

Beatty said the proposed inscription on the front of the building would read: “The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts Restored and Renovated By President Donald J. Trump.”

The board also voted to name an outdoor area “The President Donald J. Trump Plaza,” according to Beatty.

The decision is expected to intensify an ongoing legal dispute over efforts to associate Trump’s name with the Kennedy Center. Beatty accused the board, which includes Trump-appointed members, of attempting to circumvent an earlier federal court ruling.

“This latest development is a transparent effort to circumvent the Court’s ruling, and flies in the face of the statutes that Congress passed,” Beatty said, pledging to continue challenging the move.

The White House defended the board’s decision. Assistant press secretary Liz Huston said that under Trump’s leadership, the Kennedy Center was on its way to becoming “the finest cultural institution anywhere in the world.”

Congress established the Kennedy Center in 1964 as a living memorial to President John F. Kennedy following his assassination.

Beatty pointed to federal law restricting the addition of memorials or memorial-style plaques at the center. U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper cited that statute when he ordered Trump’s name removed from the building in May.

Norm Eisen, an attorney representing Beatty, said the latest vote showed “blatant disrespect to the courts,” arguing that a federal judge had already rejected the board’s previous attempt to rename the institution.

The board is required to report the outcome of Thursday’s meeting to Cooper within five days. The judge has also ordered the board to explain what it plans to do with the tarp currently covering the building’s facade.
