Professor of Political Economy, Pat Utomi, has called for an age limit for political office holders, saying Nigerians above 70 years should no longer contest elective positions.
Utomi made the remark in a post on his verified X handle on Sunday, where he argued that the country’s political system has been undermined by impunity and disregard for due process.
According to him, past administrations concealed the health conditions of serving presidents while others governed in their names.
“Impunity and disregard of decent order has become our way. When Yar’Adua was dying people lied and governed in his name.
“They did the same with Buhari. They are doing so again. This is high treason. This is why I say nobody over 70 should run for office. I am 70 years old,” he wrote.
The political economist maintained that his position was based on the need to strengthen accountability and preserve the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic process.
Utomi had earlier called for renewed efforts to instil democratic values in young Nigerians, stressing that civic education remains essential to sustaining democracy and advancing national development.
