Kwara Bans Graduation, Valedictory Ceremonies Over Security Concerns

The Kwara State Government has banned graduation, valedictory and other end-of-session ceremonies in public and private schools across the state, citing prevailing security concerns.

The directive was conveyed in a memo dated June 15, 2026, signed by Mrs. B. Osanupin on behalf of the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Lawal Olohungbebe.

According to the government, the decision was taken as a precautionary measure to protect students, teachers and school communities amid ongoing security challenges across the country.

The memo, addressed to the Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Universal Basic Education Board, instructed school proprietors, principals, headteachers and administrators to suspend all graduation, valedictory and similar ceremonies planned for the 2026 end-of-academic session.

Authorities explained that the move was aimed at maintaining order, safety and decorum within educational institutions during a period of heightened security concerns.

“In view of the prevailing security challenges and the need to maintain order, safety, and decorum within schools, the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development has directed that all public and private schools in Kwara State are prohibited from organising or conducting graduation, valedictory, or similar end-of-session ceremonies for students,” the memo stated.

The government also warned that strict enforcement measures would be applied, stressing that schools that fail to comply with the directive would face sanctions in line with existing regulations.

“Please note that any school found to be in violation of this directive shall be liable to appropriate sanctions in accordance with existing regulations,” the memo added.

The order takes immediate effect and applies to all educational institutions in the state as the government seeks to minimise potential security risks associated with large public gatherings.
