NYPD Flags Elevated Security Concerns as NBA Finals Return to New York

The return of the NBA Finals to New York City has prompted heightened security measures, with the New York Police Department warning of an increased risk that high-profile events could attract individuals seeking to cause disruption or violence.

According to an NYPD threat assessment obtained by ABC News, Monday night’s championship game at Madison Square Garden presents a “heightened risk of attention by malicious actors across the ideological spectrum.”

The document noted that major sporting events can serve as attractive targets for individuals or groups seeking to carry out acts of violence or create public disturbances because of their visibility and large crowds.

The Knicks are hosting an NBA Finals game at Madison Square Garden for the first time in 27 years as they pursue their first league championship since 1973.

Adding to the event’s profile, President Donald Trump has indicated that he plans to attend one of the Finals games in New York. Trump said last week that Knicks owner James Dolan had invited him to the series.

“The answer is yes,” Trump told reporters when asked whether he would attend. “He has invited me, and I’m going. I could be there Monday. Maybe I’ll do both.”

In preparation for the president’s visit, the NYPD announced Sunday that a planned outdoor watch party for fans outside Madison Square Garden has been canceled.

Officials said the decision was part of broader security enhancements surrounding the game and the anticipated attendance of the president.

The Knicks enter Game 3 with a 2-0 lead over the San Antonio Spurs, putting the franchise within striking distance of its first NBA title in more than five decades.

Despite the heightened precautions, police emphasized that there is currently no specific or credible threat linked to the event.

The assessment was prepared by the NYPD’s Counterterrorism and Intelligence Bureau, which routinely conducts security reviews for major public gatherings, sporting events and other high-profile occasions.

The increased security presence follows scenes on Friday night when thousands of Knicks supporters gathered around Madison Square Garden to watch Game 2 on large screens while the team played in San Antonio.

With the Finals returning to New York amid intense public excitement and national attention, law enforcement agencies are expected to maintain a significant security presence around the arena and surrounding areas throughout the series.
