Senate Approves Pension and Health Reforms

The Senate has passed a series of amendments targeting pension administration, healthcare governance, and the management of teaching hospitals, while also confirming a nominee for the Unclaimed Funds Trust Fund.

The decisions were reached during plenary presided over Senate President Godswill Akpabio, following the consideration and adoption of multiple committee reports.

Lawmakers confirmed Obehi Aire Okafor as Co-Chairman of the Governing Council of the Unclaimed Funds Trust Fund after reviewing a report presented by Mohammed Sani Musa, Chairman of the Committee on Finance. He stated, “The committee carefully screened the nominee and found her suitable for the position.”

In a related development, the Red Chamber approved the National Assembly Service Pension Board (Establishment) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026. Presenting the report, Cyril Oluwole Fasuyi said the proposed changes are designed to strengthen governance and enhance pension administration within the National Assembly.

The Senate also passed the National Health Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026, following a report by Ipalibo Harry Banigo, who explained that the amendments would improve coordination and service delivery across secondary and tertiary healthcare systems.

Additionally, lawmakers adopted a joint report on the University Teaching Hospitals (Reconstitution of Boards, etc.) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026. The legislation seeks to restructure governance in federal teaching hospitals through improved oversight and the reconstitution of governing boards.

All recommendations were unanimously approved, underscoring the Senate’s push to boost institutional efficiency, accountability, and service delivery across key sectors.
