Atiku Throws Weight Behind ADC Ahead of 2027

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has declared his readiness to support whoever emerges as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the 2027 election.

Speaking in an interview with DW Hausa, Atiku said all aspirants within the party are committed to unity and would respect the outcome of the primary.

“We will support and endorse whoever emerges as the flag bearer. How many are we—three or four? In the PDP, more than ten of us contested,” he said.

He also dismissed concerns that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) could undermine the ADC, despite the electoral body’s decision to suspend engagement with the party’s leadership and decline to monitor its planned convention.

While INEC cited a court ruling for its stance, the ADC has rejected that interpretation and insists it will proceed with its convention and internal processes.

Atiku alleged that vested interests are behind the party’s current challenges, linking the situation to its growing popularity nationwide.

He emphasised the ADC’s focus on youth and women inclusion, noting that many aspirants from councillorship to National Assembly positions—are young people.

“The youths have taken over the party. Most of those seeking elective positions are young people. Our role is to create the opportunity and hand it over to them,” he said.

On the possibility of supporting a younger presidential candidate, Atiku expressed openness, saying, “Yes, why not.”

He further voiced concern over Nigeria’s economic and security situation, stating that many citizens are eager for change.

“We are confident that Nigerians are yearning for change. They are ready for it,” he said.

Atiku also linked rising insecurity, particularly in northern Nigeria, to youth unemployment and poor access to education, warning that the situation could worsen if not urgently addressed.

He accused the government of failing to tackle corruption effectively, alleging that it has turned a blind eye to the problem.
