Human rights activist and pro-democracy campaigner Omoyele Sowore has declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election, stating that he aims to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Sowore said his proposed administration would prioritise addressing Nigeria’s electricity crisis and rising insecurity if elected.
Speaking in an interview, the former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress said his ambition to lead the country remains active. He emphasised that, unlike many politicians who appear only during election periods, he has maintained consistent involvement in socio-political advocacy.
The activist, who founded the online investigative platform Sahara Reporters, described power sector reform as a cornerstone of his political agenda, stressing that reliable electricity is critical for economic transformation.
“The whole idea of energy is what will bring about an industrial revolution in this country. If we get power right, we can tackle unemployment, boost GDP and address insecurity,” he said.
Sowore also criticised the federal government’s “Renewed Hope” agenda, arguing that the policy direction of the current administration has yet to significantly improve the living conditions of Nigerians.
According to him, Nigeria requires a new generation of leadership with the vision and capacity to address the country’s deep-rooted challenges. He said his continued political engagement reflects a commitment to offering Nigerians an alternative ahead of the 2027 general election.
Sowore previously contested the presidency under the African Action Congress in both the 2019 and 2023 Nigerian general elections, campaigning on platforms centred on anti-corruption, youth empowerment and institutional accountability.
Beyond electoral politics, he has remained active in civic mobilisation and democratic advocacy, frequently using public campaigns and social media platforms to highlight governance issues and encourage citizen participation in Nigeria’s democratic process.
