Former House of Representatives member, Hon. Shina Peller, has cautioned that Nigeria’s democracy could face serious danger if a credible opposition voice is weakened or silenced.
Peller spoke at the 2026 Ramadan Public Lecture titled “The Importance of Community Development in Islam” held in Iseyin, Oyo State, where he criticised what he described as moves to undermine the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following the recent defection of governors and key political figures.
The Ayedero of Yorubaland stressed that the matter transcends party politics, insisting that democracy can only thrive where there is balance and a strong opposition.
“For me, it’s not what I see about the prospect of PDP; it is what I see about the prospect of democracy.
“There must be a voice for the opposition. It’s not about PDP. Our leaders must understand that,” Peller said.
The entrepreneur and CEO of Aquila Group urged political actors and members of the judiciary to avoid actions that could stifle dissent, calling on them to uphold justice and fairness in line with moral and religious principles. He also reminded leaders of their accountability before God, encouraging them to live righteously and build a legacy future generations would be proud of.
The lecture, organised in honour of the late Professor Abiola Peller, drew Muslim faithful and community leaders from across Oke Ogun.
Guest lecturer Sheik Jamiu Ajadi Sanusi (Ami Olorun) urged Nigerians, particularly politicians and traditional rulers, to prioritise youth empowerment and community development.
Dignitaries at the event included the Aseyin of Iseyin, Oba Sefiu Olawale Oyebola Adeyeri III; Chief Imam Jamiu Olokuta; Iseyin Local Government Chairman, Hon. Bisi Rasak Fadiran; and other political and community leaders.
