Security First: Tinubu Sets Agenda for Olatunji Disu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has charged newly appointed Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to urgently stabilise Nigeria’s worsening security situation, pledging him full presidential backing at what he described as a defining moment for the nation’s law-enforcement architecture.

Disu’s elevation follows the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun on Tuesday, a move reportedly linked to family considerations. His appointment awaits ratification by the Police Council and confirmation by the Senate.

Speaking at the State House during Disu’s decoration ceremony, Tinubu described the appointment as “deliberate and timely,” citing Disu’s track record.

“I know your record. I saw the dedication you exhibited while you were in Lagos when I was governor,” the President said.

Tinubu made clear that restoring internal security is now an urgent national priority.

“Nigeria is challenged with banditry, terrorism and other criminal activities. You will be part of the thinking and innovation to overcome them,” he said.

He urged the new police chief to combine firmness with fairness, raise professional standards across ranks and ensure that protection of lives and property remains paramount.

“It’s a daunting challenge, but I know you can do it. You have my word — you have my full support.”

The President also tasked Disu with rebuilding public trust in the police and deepening collaboration with other security agencies under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Addressing journalists after his decoration, Disu acknowledged the gravity of the security climate, particularly the threats posed by insurgency and banditry.

“The country is facing a particular problem now… All I need to do is channel the morale and thoughts of our officers to make everything better,” he said.

He pledged to focus his tenure on three pillars:

·       Professionalism and modernisation

·       Accountability and integrity

·       Community partnership

Disu emphasised intelligence-led policing, forensic investigation and digital tools as key drivers of operational reform. He also sent a strong warning on misconduct:

“I will say this plainly, so there is no confusion: the days of impunity are over. The badge is a symbol of public trust.”

He further stressed that policing must be citizen-centred.

“The citizens of this country are the bosses. No police service anywhere in the world can succeed without the cooperation of the public.”

Egbetokun also, expressed confidence in Disu’s leadership, saying he believes the Acting IG will surpass his achievements.
