Hajj 2026: NAHCON Seals Airlift Deal, Sets Deadlines

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has signed the 2026 Hajj Airlift Agreement, marking a major step in preparations for next year’s pilgrimage and stressing strict compliance with operational standards.

The commission said the agreement is designed to guarantee seamless transportation of Nigerian pilgrims to and from the Saudi Arabia, with a strong focus on safety, punctuality, and adherence to regulatory guidelines. It emphasised that efficient airlift operations are vital to the overall success of the Hajj exercise.

Speaking at the signing ceremony in Abuja, NAHCON Chairman/CEO, Ismail Yusuf Abba, described the development as “a defining milestone in the commission’s readiness for the 2026 Hajj,” noting that airlift arrangements remain a critical component of the pilgrimage.

According to a statement signed by Shafi Mohammed for the Commission’s Deputy Director, Information and Public Relations, Abba stressed that the operation must be handled with “utmost professionalism, precision, and commitment,” given that Hajj activities are strictly time-bound and require meticulous coordination.

He warned that compliance with the agreement is non-negotiable.

“Any airline that performs excellently will continue to enjoy our confidence and partnership, but any airline that underperforms or fails to meet agreed timelines will be sanctioned in line with the provisions of the agreement. The interest of Nigerian pilgrims remains our top priority,” Abba said.

The NAHCON boss disclosed that the agreement includes recovery timelines for airlines that fall behind schedule and provides for alternative arrangements where necessary to avoid disruptions. He assured stakeholders that the commission would diligently carry out its oversight responsibilities.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Operations, Inspectorate and Licensing, Anofiu Elegushi, said the pact reflects strengthened collaboration and a shared commitment to service excellence. He added that lessons from the 2025 Hajj airlift would inform improvements in 2026, stressing that punctuality, adequate aircraft deployment, and effective challenge management are crucial.

On behalf of participating airlines, Shehu Wada (SAN), Executive Director and representative of Max Air, described the Hajj airlift as “a national assignment” and assured the commission of the carriers’ commitment to safety, punctuality, and adherence to agreed schedules.

The ceremony concluded with the formal signing of the agreement, reinforcing NAHCON’s resolve alongside partner airlines to deliver a smooth and efficient 2026 Hajj airlift operation.
