American Convicted in Bali ‘Suitcase Murder’ Freed After 11 Years, Deported to U.S.

Indonesia has released and deported an American man after he spent more than a decade behind bars for a high-profile murder on the resort island of Bali.

Tommy Schaefer was freed Tuesday after serving 11 years of an 18-year sentence for the 2014 premeditated killing of Sheila von Wiese-Mack, the mother of his then-girlfriend, Heather Mack. The case drew international attention and became widely known as the Bali “suitcase murder,” after the victim’s body was discovered inside a suitcase at a luxury hotel.

Schaefer departed Bali on Tuesday evening from Ngurah Rai International Airport after receiving multiple sentence reductions for good behavior, according to Felucia Sengky Ratna, head of the Bali Regional Office of Indonesia’s Directorate General of Immigration.

Indonesian authorities confirmed that upon completing his prison term, Schaefer was deported to the United States in accordance with immigration procedures.
