The Senate on Tuesday reversed its earlier decision and approved an amendment allowing real-time electronic transmission of election results to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Results Viewing Portal (IReV), with Form EC8A retained as a fallback where electronic transmission fails.
The decision followed a motion moved by Chief Whip, Senator Mohammed Monguno (APC, Borno North), and seconded by Minority Leader Abba Moro during an emergency plenary in Abuja.
Reading the revised Clause 60(3) of the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2026, Senate President Godswill Akpabio stated that presiding officers shall electronically transmit results from polling units to IReV, “provided that if the electronic transmission fails and it becomes difficult to transmit the results, the Form EC8A will be the primary means of collation.”
Monguno said the rescission was necessary to align the law with public expectations, noting that fresh issues had emerged after the bill was passed on February 4, 2026.
The chamber briefly turned rowdy as some senators questioned aspects of the amendment. Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe called for a division under Order 70 but later withdrew his motion, clearing the way for the clause to be approved by voice vote.
With the resolution, the Senate reinstates electronic transmission while preserving manual collation as a safeguard against technical failure.
