French prosecutors said Tuesday they have asked Elon Musk to appear for questioning as part of an investigation into the alleged distribution of sexual deepfakes and Holocaust denial content on X.
The Paris prosecutor’s office said its cybercrime unit searched X’s offices in the French capital early Tuesday, working alongside French police cybercrime specialists and Europol.
Prosecutors issued a voluntary summons for Musk and former X chief executive Linda Yaccarino to appear and answer questions about the platform’s compliance with French law.
According to the prosecutor’s office, the investigation is examining potential criminal offenses including complicity in the possession and distribution of child sexual abuse images, violations of personal rights through the creation and dissemination of sexual deepfakes, denial of crimes against humanity, and the alleged fraudulent extraction of data from an automated processing system as part of an organized group.
“The voluntary interviews with the managers should enable them to explain their position on the facts and, where applicable, the compliance measures envisaged,” the prosecutor’s office said in a statement.
Musk and Yaccarino have been asked to appear in Paris during the week of April 20. Prosecutors did not specify whether they have the legal authority to compel their attendance.
In a separate announcement, the Paris prosecutor’s office said it would close its official account on X and would instead communicate through LinkedIn and Instagram going forward.
The investigation marks the latest scrutiny of X by European authorities amid broader concerns over content moderation and platform accountability.
