Canada’s Prime Minister Carney Condemns Trump’s Greenland Push, Warns of Global ‘Rupture’

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Tuesday criticized President Donald Trump’s efforts to acquire Greenland, warning during a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos that the international community is entering a period of profound instability.

Carney joined several allied leaders at the annual gathering in Switzerland in pushing back against Washington’s pressure campaign over Greenland, which has included proposals for tariffs on NATO allies and suggestions that the United States could use force to gain control of the Arctic territory.

Greenland is a self-governing region within the Kingdom of Denmark. Trump first floated the idea of acquiring the mineral-rich island during his first term, a proposal that Danish and Greenlandic officials have repeatedly rejected.

NATO allies have since moved to reinforce Greenland’s security amid Trump’s claims that the island and the broader Arctic region face growing influence from China and Russia.

Speaking in Davos, Carney said the world has entered a new “era of great power rivalry,” arguing that the long-standing rules-based international order is weakening.

“Let me be direct. We are in the midst of a rupture, not a transition,” Carney said. “Over the past two decades, crises in finance, health, energy and geopolitics have exposed the risks of extreme global integration. Now, great powers are using economic integration as a weapon — tariffs as leverage, financial infrastructure as coercion, and supply chains as vulnerabilities to exploit.”

Carney reaffirmed Canada’s support for Denmark and Greenland, emphasizing their right to determine the island’s future.

“On Arctic sovereignty, we stand firmly with Greenland and Denmark,” he said. “Canada strongly opposes tariffs over Greenland and calls for focused dialogue to achieve our shared objectives of security and prosperity in the Arctic.”
