Paris Saint-Germain capped a remarkable 2025 campaign by winning the FIFA Intercontinental Cup after defeating Flamengo 2–1 on penalties on Wednesday, December 17, following a 1–1 draw after extra time at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Al Rayyan, Qatar.
The victory sealed a historic sextuple for PSG, adding the Intercontinental Cup to their 2025 honours list, which already included the Ligue 1 title, Coupe de France, Trophée des Champions, UEFA Champions League, and UEFA Super Cup.
PSG took the lead in the 38th minute when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia finished clinically to put the European champions ahead. Flamengo, the reigning Copa Libertadores winners, responded in the second half as Jorginho converted a penalty in the 62nd minute to restore parity.
Both sides failed to find a winner through extra time, sending the final into a dramatic penalty shootout. PSG’s backup goalkeeper Matvey Safonov, deputising for first-choice Lucas Chevalier who is recovering from an ankle injury, emerged as the hero of the night.
After Vitinha scored PSG’s opening kick and Ousmane Dembélé missed, Safonov produced a series of crucial saves to swing the momentum in PSG’s favour. Nuno Mendes then converted his effort to move the French side to the brink, before Safonov denied Luiz Araújo to secure the trophy.
Flamengo had earned the right to face PSG after defeating Mexico’s Cruz Azul and African champions Pyramids earlier in the competition, and they pushed Luis Enrique’s side all the way with a resilient performance.
The triumph places PSG among an elite group of clubs to have achieved a sextuple in a single year, joining Barcelona (2009) and Bayern Munich (2020). Under Luis Enrique, the Parisian side have transformed a season of success into a defining moment in the club’s history, cementing their status as a global powerhouse in world football.
