Nick Reiner has been formally charged with the murders of his parents, acclaimed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer, according to court filings released Tuesday.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced the charges earlier in the day at a press conference. Reiner faces two counts of first-degree murder, along with a special circumstance allegation of multiple murders.

“Prosecuting cases involving family violence are among the most challenging and heart-wrenching matters we handle,” Hochman said in a statement following the filing. “These crimes are often marked by their intimate and brutal nature.”
The charges carry a potential sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole, or the death penalty, the district attorney said. However, Hochman emphasized that no decision has yet been made regarding whether prosecutors will seek capital punishment.
“No decision at this point has been made with respect to the death penalty,” Hochman told reporters.
Reiner remains in custody as the case proceeds through the court system.
