The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismissed claims that it is being used to target opposition politicians, describing such narratives as misleading and politically motivated.
In a statement on Sunday, the Commission’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, said suggestions of politicisation are attempts by some individuals to evade ongoing corruption investigations. He emphasised that EFCC operations are strictly guided by law and are not influenced by political considerations.
Oyewale explained that the Commission operates under its Establishment Act and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, noting that suspects are not selected based on party affiliation, religion, ethnicity, or social status. “The Commission’s weapon is its Establishment Act, which provides the ground norm of its activities,” he said, adding that constitutional immunity still applies to serving public office holders.
The EFCC also highlighted that investigations include prominent figures from the ruling party, including former governors and ministers, underscoring that probes cut across political lines.
Oyewale warned that attempts to portray lawful inquiries as political persecution are designed to undermine public confidence in Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts. He urged Nigerians to disregard false narratives and continue supporting efforts to ensure accountability and transparency.
