Several protesters were arrested in Lower Manhattan on Saturday during demonstrations over suspected Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity, according to the New York Police Department.
Demonstrators near Centre Street in Chinatown blocked vehicles and were chanting, “ICE out of New York.” At one point, protesters were seen preventing a van from exiting a garage.
The NYPD would not comment on whether federal immigration officers were conducting operations in the area, but said in a statement that officers “observed multiple people blocking the street and were told multiple times to disperse but they did not comply.” The department confirmed that “multiple” individuals were taken into custody but did not immediately release information on charges or the number of arrests.
A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security said that after social media posts urged people to gather at an ICE location in New York City, individuals “dressed in black clothing with backpacks, face masks, and goggles showed up and began to obstruct federal law enforcement officers, including by blocking the parking garage.”
DHS thanked the NYPD for assisting, saying the agency was “grateful for the NYPD officers that responded to these violent agitators and stopped the lawlessness that ensued.”
Saturday’s demonstrations come one month after a federal immigration raid targeting vendors on Canal Street in Chinatown, during which at least nine people were arrested, according to federal officials.
