Adelabu Unveils Fresh Measures to Strengthen Nigeria’s Power Sector

Minister of Power Bayo Adelabu says the federal government is accelerating efforts to expand the nation’s transmission infrastructure and deepen commercialisation across the electricity sector.

Speaking on Wednesday in Abuja at the maiden Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) stakeholders’ engagement, Adelabu said the administration is committed to building a reliable, secure and efficient power system capable of meeting national demand and supporting a competitive electricity market.

“Efforts are ongoing to strengthen regulatory alignment between the central and subnational governments, expand transmission infrastructure, improve sector commercialisation,” he said.

He added that the government is also working to ensure a “reliable and sustainable supply” while supporting initiatives that enable states to develop their own electricity markets in line with the law.

Adelabu said the ministry will continue collaborating with development agencies to drive investments that enhance system reliability, improve market liquidity and boost renewable energy integration.

Urging stakeholders to support NISO through compliance and active participation, he noted:
“This engagement provides us an opportunity to reinforce collaboration across the value chain. Our system operators, generation companies, transmission service providers, distribution licensees, regulators, market participants, state governments, and consumers all have important roles to play. No single institution can deliver a stable and efficient power sector in isolation.”

The minister stressed that progress in the sector depends on collective responsibility, strict adherence to operational standards and continuous communication across all players.

He added that the collaboration demonstrated through engagements like this reaffirms the federal government’s commitment to deepening power sector reforms, attracting private investment and unlocking renewable energy opportunities across states and communities.
