U.S. Flight Cancellations Continue Amid FAA Restrictions and Winter Weather

Air travelers faced another morning of widespread disruptions on Tuesday, with more than 1,100 flights canceled nationwide before dawn, according to flight-tracking service FlightAware.

By 5 a.m. ET, at least 1,156 flights within, into, or out of the United States had been canceled, while 541 others were delayed, FlightAware data showed.

The ongoing chaos comes as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) continues to limit capacity at 40 major airports due to staffing shortages caused by the ongoing government shutdown. The strain has been compounded by severe winter weather sweeping across parts of the country since Monday.

Chicago O’Hare International Airport recorded the highest number of early cancellations Tuesday, with more than 60 flights scrapped before 5 a.m. local time. The Midwest hub had already seen over 300 cancellations on Monday following heavy snowfall that blanketed the region.

Transportation officials warned that delays and cancellations could persist through the week as airlines struggle to adjust schedules under both FAA operational limits and adverse weather conditions affecting multiple regions.
