Three Killed, Five Injured as Parliament Building Torched in Indonesian Protest Unrest

Three people have died and five others were injured after demonstrators set fire to the regional parliament building in Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesian authorities confirmed Saturday. The violent unrest marks the first major domestic crisis faced by President Prabowo Subianto since he took office in October.

Officials from Indonesia’s disaster management agency said the exact cause of death is still under investigation. However, reports suggest the victims may have been trapped inside the building as it was engulfed in flames. Two of the injured were believed to have jumped from upper floors in a desperate attempt to escape.

The protests were sparked earlier in the week in Jakarta over growing anger at lawmakers’ salaries and benefits, and escalated dramatically on Friday after a police armored vehicle fatally struck a ride-hailing motorcyclist. President Prabowo personally visited the victim’s family that evening, offering condolences and vowing a full investigation.

The turmoil quickly spread. Jakarta saw incidents of looting and damage to transportation infrastructure, while demonstrations also broke out in other cities, including Bandung and Yogyakarta. On Saturday, Jakarta’s metro system announced trains would bypass one downtown station near the protest zone, and the city’s rapid bus service suspended routes in multiple areas.

Although protests had calmed by Saturday, officials remain on alert as unrest continues to ripple across other parts of the country. Authorities have yet to rule out further demonstrations in the coming days.
