Denmark Confronts U.S. Over Alleged Trump-Linked Influence Operations in Greenland

The Danish Foreign Ministry has summoned the top U.S. diplomat in Copenhagen following allegations that individuals linked to former U.S. President Donald Trump were involved in unauthorized influence activities in Greenland.

Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen confirmed the meeting on Wednesday, emphasizing Denmark’s firm stance against foreign interference. “We are aware that external actors maintain a persistent interest in Greenland and its role within the Kingdom of Denmark,” Rasmussen said. “It is therefore not surprising that attempts to influence the kingdom’s future may occur.”

He added, “Any such interference in Denmark’s internal affairs is unacceptable. Accordingly, I have directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to summon the U.S. chargé d’affaires for a formal discussion.”

The diplomatic action follows a report by Danish public broadcaster DR, which cited unnamed government and intelligence sources claiming that three Americans with ties to President Trump had been engaged in influence operations targeting Greenland. It remains unclear whether these individuals were acting independently or on behalf of others.

Greenland, a vast and resource-rich Arctic territory with semi-autonomous status, has long been of strategic interest to the United States. During his presidency, Trump proposed purchasing the island and later declined to rule out the use of force to assert U.S. control—remarks that were widely rebuffed by officials in both Greenland and Denmark.

Danish and Greenlandic leaders have consistently reiterated that the island is not for sale.

Rasmussen stressed that the relationship between Denmark and Greenland remains strong and cooperative: “There is close coordination between Danish and Greenlandic authorities, grounded in mutual trust.”

The Danish government has not disclosed further details about the nature or scope of the alleged American activities, but the summoning of the U.S. representative signals growing concern over foreign attempts to shape Greenland’s political trajectory.
