PDP Moves to Woo Jonathan, Obi Ahead of 2027 Elections

Senate Minority Leader and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Abba Moro, has revealed ongoing efforts to bring former President Goodluck Jonathan and Labour Party’s Peter Obi back into the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, Moro said discussions were already underway to persuade the two political figures.

“So, in the run-up to 2027, I am aware certain individuals have been talking to Peter Obi: ‘Hey, come back home, this is what we are likely to do, and if you come, you stand a chance of being the candidate,’” Moro disclosed.

On Jonathan, the lawmaker representing Benue South added: “Some persons are talking to the former president to come and run. It is a possibility.”

Jonathan, who led Nigeria between 2010 and 2015 on the PDP platform, has kept a low political profile since his defeat to Muhammadu Buhari. Though inactive in party affairs, he has not renounced his PDP membership.

Obi, who left the PDP ahead of the 2023 elections after serving as Atiku Abubakar’s running mate in 2019, contested the presidency under the Labour Party. He secured over six million votes, finishing third behind President Bola Tinubu and Atiku.

With less than two years to the next polls, Obi has declared his intention to run again but is yet to settle on a platform. Recently, he has been aligning with Atiku and other opposition leaders through the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition.
